    William "Boss" Tweed is considered one of the ten most corrupt politicians in United States history. Tweed, in 1877, stole an amount estimated by an alderman's committee between $25 million and $45 million (at least $1 billion in today's dollars) from New York City taxpayers through political corruption. He was finally convicted and spent the remainder of his life in and out of prison until finally, while in custody, succumbing to pneumonia in 1878.
